Charcoal and Pencil

As much as I love colour I have always started any project in pencil and often I find the image to be at its best in its monocrome world. Charcoal and Pencil allow me to concentrate on detail, perspective and tone.

Imagination and Imitation
I find that you can find order and symmetry in both the natural and the manufactured.

Your artwork is so impressive, Nate. I'm so inspired - I wish I had some time to make some feeble attempts at drawing. The detail and shading are so great in these; someday I want to learn how to do that!

I know how you feel about the monochromatic drawings! I didn't used to feel that way, but a whole semester drawing class in which we were not permitted to use color helped me change my mind.

Keep practicing, and when you work in color, just sketch in pencil and do the real drawing with your colors. That way you aren't just coloring over the pencil, but drawing in color. (You transfer the skills you have in plain pencil better that way.)

Nathan!! These are great. Your charcoal and pencil drawings are my favourite of all that you have posted so far. I think I might try to make something of my own. Thanks

Cool pictures Nathan. I love the charcoal and pencil drawings. It's to bad none of my charcoal art drawings turned out like that. I just remember that drawing with charcoal was very messy. My hands were always covered in a black mess. I guess that means I was working on a masterpiece. One day maybe.
